Version 2.3 - 14 June 2003

-- Fixed bug in re-author module which occurred in certain DVDs with a strange PGC structure. This bug caused dvd player to freeze or lockup at specific points in the movie.
--Added support for 64bit file sizes.
--Added support for opening files generated by IFOEdit software.
--Fixed bug which caused analysis to crash if input video stream is corrupt.
--Attempt to make "Remapping VOBS" stage more reliable, even if there are errors on original DVD.
--Added automatic "retry" (4 retries) if read from disk fails.
--Fixed error in .IFO file output: vtsi_mat_ea, vts_tmapt_ea.
--Fixed bug where video could be corrupted in some rare situations (vobu containing more than one sequence header).
--Tweaked video encoder module, now slightly faster.
--Fixed bug in "Still Pictures" mode, picture temporal reference is now set correctly, and sequence end code is always written.
--Added "Total Processing Time" information to finish dialog.
--Added support in "Preferences" for combining titles which overlap or share the same video in the DVD View. This prevents confusion where a compression level applied to one title also affects another, because they share the same video.

What can I do to get a better quality rip??

I have been making backup copies of a lot of my DVD's.
I use DVD Shrink & Nero Recode, in addition to DVD Decryptor.
I am starting to get a little picky about quality, and I am noticing that longer movies really suffer. I don't see much differnce between using DVDShrink or Nero Recode. They seem pretty comparable.

I'll give three movies to use as example.
Harry Potter & Sorcerer's Stone
Apocalypse Now Redux
Stargate Ultimate Edition

All three of these I have seen significant video quality loss. Again, maybe I am being to picky.

I use DVD Shrink.
I choose Reauthor.
I grab ONLY the actual movie - usually Title 1
I remove the end of the title to drop the credits.
I drop all audio tracks except the one I desire. Usually DTS if available.

I know DTS is fatter, but I would like the best possible quality.

These movies are viewed on progressive scan DVD Player. Sony DVP-NS755V. Component out to my Panasonic Enhanced Def Plasma.
So defects show up VERY clearly.

Is there any options in Recode, Shrink or some other prog's that will let me eliminate the defects, and still fit these titles on a DVD-R.

The Defects I am referring to is stuff like the following:

If there is a light shining in a dark area, you don't see a smooth transition from light to dark. You see rings around the light as the light fades into the darkness. Noticeable in the beginning of Sorcerers Stone.

Beginning credits in Stargate as the pan the camera around the stargate/hieroglyphics. All the motion in the background makes squigglies appear around the edges of the white lettering used for the credits.

The palm trees swaying in the beginning of Apocalypse Now. All of the motion causes heavy ?artifacting?

SO....

For 2 hour plus movies that I want to make pristine copies of, how do I get the same quality rip as I do with 90 minute movies. Is there something additonal I can do? Any useful guides? I have perused a few guides, but ain't found the right answer yet.

Thanx

Im ripping a DVD (two sided dual layer) with DVD Decryptor 3.1.7 to my hard drive in File mode and when I get to VTS_01_6.VOB this error occurs,

"Failed to read Sector 2657007 - No Seek Complete"

When I ignore it goes to the next sector and same error occurs for the next 250+ sectors until I gave up. I have enabled error skipping and cleaning the disc doesn't help. All other VOB's decyrpt with out any problems.
Is ther a way to quantify what a sector is or how much video(time) is lost if a sector is skipped? Can DVD Shrink work with skipped sectors? Any fixes?

My process flow is:
DVD Decryptor to DVD Shrink to Nero Burn

I have seen quite a few posts on the forum about problems with playback of DVDR's. The symptoms are skipping and juttery playback and breakup and blockiness of the picture, particularly towards the end of the discs.

I too was having these problems, I always labelled my CD's and saw no reason why I should not label my DVD's. I have found, however I only have these problems on the discs that I have labelled.

To test this further I burned a DVDR and did not apply a lablel. The disc played with no problems at all. I then applied a label and played the disc again. The old problems were back, skipping and breakup of the video. I therefore no longer label my DVDR's.

Why this should happen I dont know, I use proper pressit labels so this should not put the discs out of balance, the only thing I can think of is the slight additional weight.

So for those of you who have had this problem and have been applying labels, try a few discs with no labels and see how you get on. I would be interested in any feedback, as to whether this has solved problems with playback you may have had.

OK, I was reading reviews on this all-in-1 tool and it looks to have just the level of control I need (not too much in the Authoring but I don't need much). Most of the reviews were NOT with DV material. So I'm wondering what those who use it for DV think? I'd be using mini-DV camcorder footage (home video) editing with some edit software then outputting to DV-Avi file, which I would input to ConvertXToDVD .

I currently use TMPGenc Express, TMPGenc DVD AUthor then Nero to burn. Any idea how the results would compare? I see many rate ConvertXToDVD output superior to TMPGenc but i don't see much on DV conversion as compared to TMPG.

Thanks.

I have a Sony DCR-PC5 (ntsc) cam. i can capture without a prob. ntsc tapes using premiere 6.5.
Ok...the thing is, i recently got a PAL DV video and i figured i cannot view this with my ntsc cam. I tried anywayz and i actually was able to see it. Still surprised by this, i hooked up the firewire and start capturing the video....but i cannot see the signal on premiere...just audio.

ok here?s the question: since the cam is NTSC, but is able to play PAL, is there a way to capture the video to the pc???

thanx a lot

I wanted to capture the matrix code screen saver on my computer. I tried some small screen capture program, but the frames were dropping. I will try Camstia(sp?) next, but is there a program that is specific to capturing screen savers?

Oh, well if any one can help, that would be great, I want a video with Matrix code so I can loop it for a plasma.

Hi,

Hi,

I recently upgraded to Nero 8 and discovered Nero Vision 5 which
enables you to capture straight to MPEG-2 format. I'm playing
with this to see if I can skip capturing to AVI and then converting
to MPEG-2 and instead capturing straight to MPEG-2 (time saver).

I have a problem here though -- when I open Nero Vision 5 it sees
my Canopus ADVC-100 with no problem but does NOT allow me
to change any encoding settings with the "Default Video Options" button.
Actually this button/tab is grayed-out and is thus not selectable.

I need to access this function because the ADVC-100 captures DV video
with "bottom field first" while Nero Vision encodes on-the-fly to MPEG-2
with "top field first", resulting in jerky video results on DVD. I need to
be able to change Nero Vision's setting to encode DVD video with
"bottom field first" and can't find a way to do this.

Anyone have a suggestion or solution here?

Thanks,
Kevin
