Thinking of making the switch from x86 as I do a l...

Thinking of making the switch from x86 as I do a lot of video encoding and I believe I'll notice a performance gain, however I only have 2gig of ram at the moment and heard amd64 used significantly more ram? Is this true? I'm planning on upgrading to 4gig in the near future. CPU is Q6600.
